Educational Value: This book is a great read aloud to anyone as far as I know! I have loved this book ever since I was little and I still read it over and over. I think this book will allow students to explore their imaginations and escape reality.

School Reflection: Week 6

This was a sad week. I was definitely not ready to leave the students or the school. I feel like our time at Glen Alpine Elementary flew by, and I wish we were able to stay there longer. Alecia and I grew pretty close to the students in Mrs. Puckett’s classroom. We have seen days when the students could barely stay awake and we have also seen the days when they were bouncing off the walls.

Today, we really tried to work with the students on their reading. I worked with several students on sight words by using flash cards and playing games with them. I also helped students go over their reading homework and watched them take AR tests. I am really sad that we had to leave…

School Reflection Week 5

This week I gave three students the diagnostic math interview. I feel that the students are far behind in their math. Even the high student that I worked with, had no clue what subtraction was. When the students could not do subtraction, we went to addition and they even had problems with those problems. I feel that these students are extremely far behind, although I know that the teachers are working their hardest to get the students to comprehend the information. So… getting away from the disappointing news, the students are extremely excited about Thanksgiving and all the turkey!!!

School Reflection Week 4

This week I worked with students on their reading. Several of the students are getting to the point that they can take AR tests by themselves. I am not sure if the students are allowed to use their books while taking the test, but several of the students do. It amazes me how this one classroom can have so many different reading levels. I mean their several reading levels inside the reading levels. I like that the first grade teachers have created reading groups. My teacher, Mrs. Puckett, works with the high level readers. I think that by splitting up the groups and giving the groups to several different teachers that the students have a better chance of doing well in reading.

Educational Value: Students love this book! This book would be great to use if you wanted to introduce different cultures and folktales.

School Reflection: Week 3

The third week in the school, I worked with all the children on their numbers one through thirty. Some children got every single number correct when I showed them the flashcards with the number written on it, but some children were really having problems with the numbers. I continued to work with the children on the numbers that they were having the most trouble with. We wrote out the numbers and we played games with the numbers, in hopes that they would recognize and understand the number and its value. Once again I read with the children the books that they had picked out and were assigned for homework. I am beginning to see some improvement on their reading, and what they know we expect from them.
